Down Wind Sports co-owner retires after 30 years

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – After 30 years working for Down Wind Sports, Jeff Stasser finished his last day as co-owner Saturday.

He started the business with his partners Todd King and Bill Thompson to share their love of the outdoors. It has grown into three locations in Marquette, Munising and Houghton. Stasser said people don’t realize how big of a part outdoor sports play in the community.

“It’s really cool to see that I had a small part in some of those lives and some of those activities and adventures over the years,” Stasser said.

He said employees Nic Dobbs and Matt Abbotts will take over his role and continue his responsibilities at the three locations. Thompson and King will also remain as co-owners.

“They’re counting on me now as an owner of the store, employees and the community who’s trust in Jeff, who’s leaving after many years, so I’ve got big shoes to fill,” Dobbs said.

He said Stasser has been a great mentor over the past seven years he’s worked there. Dobbs left Down Wind Sports at one point to work inside the sports industry for brands like Giant Bicycles.

“In my opinion, right now, no need to rewrite everything,” Dobbs said. “It’s running well. We’ve got a good selection of just about everything somebody would need for the outdoors, so we’ll probably stick with that.”

Dobbs hopes to offer community lessons, such as free bike maintenance classes. In his retirement, Stasser plans to ride his bike and volunteer more.

“Enjoy the U.P., enjoy living here, relax here a little bit, go sailing, spend time on the trails,” Stasser added.

He is thankful to be part of the community and watch it grow.
