Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is Coming This Spooky Season

What could be scarier than the potential destruction of existence as you know it because Bald Ianto From Torchwood wants to rip apart the fabric of reality between the world and the realm of spirits? Not much, BioWare has decided, which is why, at long last, the next Dragon Age game is dropping right on Halloween.

Today BioWare and EA released a new trailer for Dragon Age: The Veilguard—formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf during its long, winding development history—confirming its October 31 release date, as well as giving us a bit of a more cinematic look at the game after its formal unveiling earlier this summer.

The new trailer dives a little more into what’s at stake in the game, which sees Varric Tethras, the Dwarven rogue and storyteller first introduced in (the perpetually criminally underrated) Dragon Age II and then further explored in its follow up, 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, recruit a new hero and team of allies to help take down a former friend. That “friend” of course is Solas (played by the aforementioned Ianto from Torchwood, aka Gareth David-Lloyd), the elf mage players welcomed into their ranks during Inquisition, only for him to ultimately reveal that he is actually the ancient god, Fen’Harel—now seeking to restore the elves’ old kingdom, at the cost of destroying the world as it exists. Except, things go a bit sideways thanks to your intervention, and now all the trapped elven gods are running amok. Woops!

We get to see a little more of that new hero, Dragon Age‘s latest customizable protagonist, known as “Rook,” as well as some of the new companions Varric has recruited to his cause. There’s some familiar faces, like Varric himself and Inquisition‘s Scout Harding–and even a surprise return by Claudia Black’s mysterious mage, Morrigan. But aside from them they’re largely entirely new characters this time around. It makes sense, considering it’s been a decade since Inquisition came out, and The Veilguard is already dealing with enough context around the past games that it doesn’t really need to be tying itself even further into plot points from over a decade or more ago. Or at least, not yet—save that for in the nitty-gritty of the game itself, rather than the flashy new trailers designed to remind the world that yes, indeed, there really is a new Dragon Age game coming out again.

It’s got a release date and everything! Dragon Age: The Veilguard hits PC, as well as Xbox Series X and S, and Playstation 5, October 31.
