This weekend, comedian Drew Dunn will bring his funny impressions, characters and perspectives to Loonees Comedy Corner.
The New York-based comedian began his stand-up career back in 2014. Since then, he has won the 2017 Boston Comedy Festival and the 2018 Seattle International Comedy Competition. In 2019, the young comedian was named the “New Face of Comedy” at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.
“It blows my mind that [stand-up] even exists a lot of times — the fact that it’s just ingrained as part of our culture where people come out to listen to funny people say things,” he said. “I feel just grateful that I’m in a position to do it. The fact that it’s different every time, the fact that it’s challenging and you’re constantly making adjustments and trying to get better at it, that’s what makes it fun for me.”
Dunn has performed at Loonees several times throughout his career, returning once again for two nights. The show will also feature Steven Roberts and host Ronell Hardin.
During his set, Dunn will show off his accents and characters, as well as share experiences in his life — including just recently finding out his wife is pregnant.
“My first daughter is coming at the end of October, so that’s definitely made its way to my set, as well as just how I perceive what’s going on in this crazy world that we’re living in,” Dunn said.
One of seven kids, Dunn comes from a big family — an experience that has helped shape his comedic outlook.
“Every comic is original in their own way. They all kind of went through life with their own flavor,” he said. “All the experiences I’ve had in life have given me a filter that’s kind of fun to see the world through.”
During the show, he hopes audience members are able to forget about the world for a little bit and be present.
“That’s kind of the best part about comedy, is you can kind of get lost in the chaos of your own life or what’s going on in the news or politics and all that nonsense. So coming to a show and being able to kind of let your hair down and forget about the world outside of the four walls of Loonees Comedy Corner for a few hours, I think is something more people need to do,” he said.
