East Texans enjoying Tax Free Weekend

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – East Texans are flooding the aisles of stores and shopping during the back-to-school Tax Free Weekend.

Samantha Smith, a resident of Jacksonville, went shopping Saturday with her daughter Annmarie at Academy in Tyler ahead of Annmarie’s fifth grade year. They were looking for back-to-school clothes and especially shoes.

“Looking to save some dollars is always nice with kids going back to school,” Smith said.

Casey Busby, a teacher at Hawkins High School, was also scouring the shoe aisle.

“Because after thirty years, your feet get a little tired,” Busby said.

With thirty years of experience teaching, Busby knows the importance of parents getting to save some money with school starting back.

“Especially with inflation and things like that, it’s important that parents have the availability to save some money,” Busby said.

Busby is also using Tax Free Weekend as an opportunity to find deals that can help her help students.

“I usually buy kids school supplies, so it saves me a little money too,” Busby said.

As stores vie for customers, Frank Estrada, a logistics manager from the Corsicana store who is helping at the Tyler store for Tax Free Weekend, said they have added special promotions.

“Academy is here for our community and just to help everyone be prepared on their way back to school because it is a hefty cost, and everybody likes to save,” Estrada said.

As East Texans continue shopping through Sunday, Smith has a reminder for fellow shoppers.

“Just be patient with all the workers. There’s a lot of people everywhere. Be patient with one another and be kind as you’re out shopping,” Smith said.

Texas Tax Free Weekend continues until midnight Sunday.

Qualifying items can be bought in store, online, through the mail, and by any other method as long as the sale happens within the Tax Free Weekend period.
