East Texas game warden introduces kids to team sports with ‘blitzball’ league

UPSHUR COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – An East Texas game warden has spent his time, money and energy getting kids outside for some fun and exercise through a sport called “blitzball.”

Upshur County Game Warden Nathan Skeen built his own baseball diamond facility and started a blitzball league two years ago. The sport is almost identical to baseball, except it is played with a plastic ball and bat.

It’s designed to introduce kids, most of whom have never experienced organized play, to the fun of being part of a sport. Six-person teams of boys and girls comprise a league that includes up to teenagers.

Skeen says aside from getting fresh air and exercise, the game can teach important character building lessons.
