Economic impact of DC’s major sports teams, entertainment venues report releases

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) released a report Thursday detailing “actual and potential fiscal, economic, and community impacts of professional sports” in D.C.

That report analyzed how sports and entertainment venues have economically impacted D.C. to date. It also details how potential relocations of major sports teams into the city could impact the District as well.

“DC is the Sports Capital. We know how important sports are to our city’s economy and culture,” Mayor Muriel Bowser stated in a news release. “They create jobs, generate tax revenue, and spur economic development. But sports also create a lot of pride in our city, they bring people together, and we look forward to continuing to support our teams in ways that benefit our city and residents and help knock DC’s Comeback out of the park.”

D.C. commissioned the report to help DMPED’s work with professional and recreational sports around the District.
