MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Ed Abdella is hitting the road again, this time for the hardest race in the world.

On June 11th, Abdella will be the first Mississippian to take on the Race Across America.

The race includes biking over 3,000 miles from California to New Jersey on a 12-day journey.

Ed has been training for this race for the last six years and in just the last 365 days he has biked over 13,000 miles in preparation.

Throughout the race, Ed will be raising money for Hope Village for Children; his goal is to raise $1 million.

But raising money is not the only ‘why‘ for Ed’s journey across the United States.

“So why am I doing it? It’s just something. I got the itch. And it was something I saw six years ago when I was riding and I’m doing it for a lot of reasons. I’m doing, one, for Hope Village. But another thing, you know, I spent 26 years in the military, and a lot of the endurance riding I do is really for guys that can’t. Guys that, you know, didn’t come back, and that’s kind of the stuff that I think about as I age. And maybe it’s the last little, you know, hoo-rah for me. You know, one of those you know I’m getting old. So it’s one of those. Hey, let’s do this,” said Abdella.

Abdella’s team will be headed off to California within the next week.
