When in doubt, a sleek leather trench coat is always a good idea — just ask Trinity and Neo of The Matrix, or stylish stars Hailey Bieber, Zoë Kravitz, Emily Ratajkowski, or Elle Fanning, for that matter.

Fanning is the latest celebrity to rep the street-style staple, and she did so in true New Yorker fashion — with other chic all-black staples — for a night out in Manhattan. On Saturday, the actor stepped out in Tribeca wearing a glossy black faux leather trench with structured shoulders and a sharp collar. She cinched the floor-length coat at the waist with a leather belt that she knotted at the centre.

Under the coat, Fanning wore a silky shirt dress in a cool, electric purple. The maxi had black buttons that matched the rest of the actress’ outfit, including her pointy black leather over-the-knee boots from Stuart Weitzman.

The Great star capped off the outfit with Bottega Veneta’s Kalimero Città shoulder bag in the brand’s signature intrecciato leather weave.

Fanning’s solo outing came one day after she attended Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians event held at the Apollo Theatre. Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner, the actress’ boyfriend, was her date. For the occasion, Fanning dressed up in a sleek, sheer black slip dress with lacy straps adorned with pretty bows. She layered the dress over a black bra and matching high-waisted briefs.
