Embrace Body Fitness and Nutrition holds Breast Cancer event for women
The in-person portion of the walk was not held because of Tropical Storm Helene, but people could still support it with donations.
Martin said her goal was to raise $200 for the Miracle Walk and was able to reach that goal.
Martin said she’s not directly affected by breast cancer, but she has a cousin with stage 3 breast cancer. She said her cousin was supposed to attend the classes, but wasn’t able to because of the effects of chemo .
Martin said she still supports her no matter what.
“I am sitting here cheering her on,” she said.
Martin, who is also part of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, said the founder of the sorority died from breast cancer.
One of Martin’s clients, Stacy Lang, has been coming to Embrace Fitness for about a month, and said she is motivated and challenged by Martin.
“It’s a real sense of community that I have seen so far,” Lang said.
Victoria Jenkins, another gym member, came to the session for support.
She said she likes how Martin makes the classes fun and the gym is a safe space for women who want to work out.
“It’s pretty amazing to give back in small town,” she said.
Courtney Dozer has been coming to Martin’s gym since she first opened in April and keeps coming back because she enjoys the experience. Dozer said the gym session was important because she has a godmother who has breast cancer and had an aunt passed away from cancer.
“It was just very important for me to be here today,” she said.
Dozer said Martin cares a lot about the community, and the all women’s gym has allowed all the women to support each other.
“She is a great person for doing this because a lot of people don’t,” she said.
Martin wants to make this an annual event. She said she would do anything to provide support in the community the best way she can.
The gym is located at 1799 Edgefield Road in North Augusta.
