Enfield teachers fighting against proposed budget that could cut 120 jobs
ENFIELD, CT (WFSB) – Enfield teachers have their jobs on the line as the town and school district work to sort out next year’s budget.
The teachers union asked the town council for an 8.68% budget increase, which equates to about $6.5 million. They say that’s what it will take to maintain the current programs and staffing.
However, some town council want no more than a 2% increase. Teachers say if that happens, some schools wouldn’t be able to open next year.
Teachers would lose their jobs and class sizes would increase. “That would devastate Enfield public schools. We’ve already had 121 teachers in Enfield get non-renewal notices. they’re not being offered contracts for next year,” said Bill Delaney, the Vice President of the Enfield Teachers Association and a teacher at JFK Middle School.
121 teachers is more than a fifth of Enfield’s total teacher population. A meeting is set for Monday night at the Town Hall for 7:00 PM, where there will be public comment.
The town council has until May 20th to make a decision.
