Entertainment critic Derek Sante checks out The Convert, Dandelion & Longlegs

In theaters and On Demand comes the story of a preacher escaping his past in The Convert. Starring Guy Pearce as a man caught in the middle of a tribal war, wanting to save more than just the innocent. The story follows a lay preacher’s violent past is drawn into question, and his faith tested as he becomes caught up in a bloody war between Maori tribes after arriving at a British settlement in the 1830s. Grade: B

Next, in theaters and everywhere you watch movies comes the indie film Dandelion. A struggling singer-songwriter falls into an intoxicating romance that leads her to a deeper appreciation of her artistic journey as she discovers a voice that is authentically her own. Grade: B

Also in theaters comes a new horror movie starring a very different-looking Nicolas Cage, it’s called Longlegs. Children are missing, and there is a pattern. A young agent starts to decipher the codes and uses her natural gifts to see through darkness and time. Wanting to be a mixture of The Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs, this film aims high and just barely misses. Grade: C+

Lastly, we get animated on Netflix with the new show Exploding Kittens. Yes, it’s connected to the card game, but not fully. Based on the game and webcomic, we follow God (Voiced by Tom Ellis) as he is sent down to Earth to reconnect with humanity. Landing in the body of a cat, his presence is only slightly diminished as he faces off against Devil Cat (Voiced by Sasheer Zamata) and connects with a somewhat common American family. Grade: B-
