‘Strange Awakening’
“Strange Awakening,” drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture by North Little Rock artist and graphic designer Brian Wolf delving into what a news release describes as “the emotional resonance of symbols and storytelling,” opens with a 5-8 p.m. Argenta Art District Third Friday Art Walk reception Friday at the Argenta Library Gallery, 420 Main St., North Little Rock. Area tuba and euphonium players are taking part in TubaChristmas, the 51st tribute to the late William Bell, who modernized and popularized tuba and euphonium performance, 2 p.m. Saturday at the Patrick Henry Hays Senior Center, 401 W. Pershing Blvd., North Little Rock. Andy Anders, professor emeritus and retired music department chair at Arkansas Tech in Russellville, will conduct. Admission is free. Prizewinning composition
Robert Mueller, professor of music at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the UA University Symphony Orchestra have received an honorable mention in the American Prize Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music competition, for Mueller’s work “Satori (Awakening),” a concerto for violin and orchestra. Violinist Tara Mueller performed the 26-minute piece with the orchestra May 1, 2017 (youtube.com/watch?v=Npqs4gS-gpM). The awards were announced Dec. 5. The competition focuses on works by American composers from any period and in any style.
