Entertainment News: Shogun wins big at Emmy Awards

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were given out honoring the best in American Prime Time TV in Los Angeles California.

Shogun broke the Emmys record walking away with a total of 18 wins.

The miniseries honored last night is based off of the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. It was made into a miniseries back in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain.

“Shogun” star Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor in a drama and his co-star Anna Sawai won Best Actress. They’re the first Japanese actors to win those categories.

The film also won Best Drama that included wins from the creative arts Emmy’s held last week.

The new 2024 American mini series was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.

Rachel grew up in Pukalani, Maui and graduated from Maui High School. Justin is her husband. They were recently named as this years’ HIFF 44 Career Achievement Award honorees.

With HIFF kicking off next month, Justin and Rachel will be in Hawaii on Oct. 11 at Consolidated Kahala for “Shogun: An Evening with Showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo”.

OTHER BIG WINNERS LAST NIGHT:

“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” wins Best Scripted Variety Series, and he paid tribute to his dog, who passed away recently.

Richard Gadd won Best Actor in a limited series for “Baby Reindeer”. He later returned to the stage when the show won best limited series.

“Hacks” scored an upset to win Best Comedy, beating out last season’s winner, “the bear”, which had the most comedy nominations and was heavily favored to repeat.

Tito Jackson, one of the brothers in the popular group the Jackson 5 dies at age 70. According to Entertainment Tonight – the first to report the news – he died after suffering an apparent heart attack. Tito was the third of nine Jackson children — which included superstars Michael and sister Janet. The Jackson 5 became one of the biggest names in music under the guidance of their father, Joe Jackson.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” kept its grip on the box office this weekend. Following its monster opening last weekend, the Tim Burton sequel raked in another 51-point-6 million dollars in ticket sales, according to studio estimates. That brings its gross in North America at 188-million. It’s a big win for Warner Brothers, which had a weak summer box office, bringing in only a 4-point-7% share of summer ticket sales.

The second place film lagged far behind. James McAvoy’s “Speak No Evil” made an estimated $11.5 million.
