EPA Administrator visits Baltimore to celebrate job training graduates

On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Adam Ortiz, Civic Works, Center for Sustainable Careers leaders and community leaders, gathered to celebrate the graduation of Brownfields’ Job Training participants.

Civic Works was also recognized and acknowledged for its commitment to recruiting and training at-risk and out-of-school youth, high school students, underemployed, unemployed, veterans, and returning citizens for success in today’s job market.

Over the past 15 years of operation, Civic Works has created a network of over 400 working graduates.

Civic Works was awarded two grants from the Biden-Harris Administration. In 2023, they received $500,000 in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds and $200,000 non-BIL funding that started in 2022.

The grant money is used to help students develop skills needed to secure full-time employment in various aspects of hazardous and solid waste management and within the larger environmental field, including sustainable cleanup and reuse, and chemical safety.

Between 2023 – 2027, Civic Works plans to recruit 240 individuals into a 154-hour curriculum producing at least 192 graduates and at least 163 graduates placed in jobs.
