Ex-Sabres Populating The Waiver Wire

The Buffalo Sabres and the rest of the National Hockley League will need to cut down to 23 players prior to the opening day for the rest of the league on Wednesday. The other 30 clubs narrowed their rosters down significantly, while the Sabres and New Jersey because of the Global Series were able to carry a taxi squad while over in Europe.

Over the last week, six former Sabres were placed on waivers by their respective teams and all cleared to be sent to the American Hockey League:

Brandon Biro (SEA) – The 26-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Kraken after scoring 43 points last season for Rochester and two goals in five games with the Sabres, but is now headed to Coachella Valley.

Casey Fitzgerald (FLA) – A 2016 third-round pick of the Sabres, Fitzgerald played 59 NHL games over two seasons before being claimed on waivers by the Panthers. The 27-year-old played two playoff games for Florida on their run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2023 but spent all of last season in Charlotte.

Rasmus Asplund (FLA) – A 2016 second-round pick, Asplund played parts of four seasons with Buffalo before being traded to Nashville for a 2025 seventh-round pick. The 26-year-old center was signed by Florida in the summer of 2023 and also spent all of last season in Charlotte.

Justin Bailey (SJ) – The big winger has become a journeyman since being traded by the Sabres in 2019. After stops in Philadelphia and Vancouver, the 29-year-old played 59 games last season for the Sharks during their tanking campaign for Macklin Celebrini. This season he will stay in San Jose, but will play for the Barracuda.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby (WPG) – The former Capitals draft pick was a member of the Sabres for a grand total of seven days. After being claimed off of waivers, by Washington, the Sabres tried to sneak him down to Rochester and he was subsequently claimed by the Jets, where he has played 76 games over the last two seasons.

Zac Dalpe (FLA) – Dalpe is either the Reg Dunlop or Crash Davis of pro hockey, playing 168 NHL games for six clubs and six AHL clubs since turning pro in 2010. Dalpe played 21 games with the Sabres in 2014-15, and is headed to AHL Charlotte.
