Expansion of North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex making progress, city says
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – A project to expand the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex is making “visible progress,” according to city officials.
The city provided an update Friday on the project, stating that the second phase of the extension of Champions Boulevard is a little over halfway done. As of Friday, the city said contractors are installing infrastructure for draining and the base for the road.
The second phase of the extension is set to be complete by spring 2025. Once it’s completed, a date will be set to begin a third phase of the road’s expansion – which is already under contract and has designs completed.
“The expansion of this facility will allow the city to host larger tournaments, as well as multiple tournaments and special events at one time” the city said in a statement. “Youth sports have grown tremendously, especially in baseball, softball, and soccer. The additional fields included in this expansion will allow more of our local youth to participate in youth sports.”
Some of the items included in the complex’s overall expansion include five new soccer fields, six baseball fields, freshwater ponds as well as walking tails, playgrounds and picnic shelters.
Construction on the complex’s expansion began in May, with site preparation nearing completion as of Friday. The city said contractors are digging ponds, grading and working on erosion control – with work set to continue for the next few months.
Officials said the next steps include in-ground draining, utility infrastructure, and building pad preparation – with above-ground work set to begin afterward.
The city said it anticipated construction to be done by September 2025.
