Exploring Regional Travel: These Are Avelo Airlines’ 5 Shortest Domestic Flights
Summary
- Avelo Airlines operates short-distance flights from convenient regional airports.
- The airline’s fleet comprises Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft, offering a streamlined operation.
- The carrier does not provide inflight entertainment or food for purchase and suggests that passengers prepare ahead for their journey.
Low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines will celebrate its third year since commencing operations this week. The airline has transported millions of passengers throughout its successful life, having begun revenue service in the middle of a global pandemic. Although it may not be a major contender to the numerous well-established and more-known carriers, the airline still has several routes that compete with several airlines. Its network, which encompasses many destinations across the US, is supported by multiple East Coast and West Coast bases.

Despite offering flights across the country, Avelo’s services typically consist of shorter durations. In fact, many of its flights are only a few hundred miles. While the carrier operates at some major hubs, its main focus is to fly out of smaller, more convenient airports, which it says saves passengers “time and hassle.” Avelo’s fleet consists of a mixture of Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft, allowing for a streamlined operation.
All under 400 miles
Next month, the airline has five scheduled routes under 400 miles in length, according to aviation data and analytics firm Cirium. All of them involve one of the airline’s six bases, which include:
- Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)
- Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) in Southern Connecticut
- Orlando International Airport (MCO)
- Wilmington Airport (ILG) in Delaware
- Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU)
- Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas

The carrier plans to open a seventh base in May at Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) near the Bay Area, marking more growth. Although low-cost, its business model reflects that of Allegiant Air, which also flies to less populated, rural areas. Similarly, Avelo does not offer daily flights to many of its destinations. In some cases, some routes may only be served a handful of times each month.

At just 223 miles, BUR-LAS will be the airline’s shortest route next month. This service will be operated by the Boeing 737-700 with nine departures in each direction. HVN-BWI is only slightly longer, at 247 total miles, and it will also operate with 18 total frequencies. However, its capacity is bumped by nearly 100 seats, as Avelo plans to deploy both 737 variants on the route. Naturally, ILM-BWI has greater capacity as it will only be operated by the 737-800.

At 345 miles, this route will be offered across 18 total flights, nine in each direction. The same frequencies, equipment, and number of seats are also scheduled on the 394-mile ILM-ILG route. Interestingly, the flight operates between Wilmington and Wilmington, albeit the former is in North Carolina and the latter is in Delaware. Although STS-BUR is technically the fourth shortest, the intra-California route has the most frequencies and seats offered. It has 27 flights scheduled in each direction, equaling 54 total segments. The 737-700 is slated to operate between the two destinations, offering just over 8,000 seats next month.
About the planes
Avelo’s all-737 fleet comprises 16 aircraft – seven 737-700s and nine 737-800s. The airline credits the planes for“their superior fuel efficiency, reliability, safety and comfort.“All cabins are configured in a one-class format, with the -700s accommodating 149 passengers and the -800s seating 189 passengers. Each seat has a pitch ranging between 32-36 inches. The -700s are outfitted with 44 extra legroom seats, and the -800s have 57 seats with increased legroom.
The average seat width is 17 inches across. However, if a passenger cannot fit in a single seat, they must buy an additional seat for their flight.
“If you’re unable to sit safely and comfortably in a single seat you’ll have to purchase an additional seat for each flight on your reservation. You can buy the second seat for the same fare as your original seat if both seats are purchased at the same time. If you don’t buy an extra seat in advance, you may have to do so on the day of departure for the fare level available on the day of departure.”

Bring what you need onboard
Avelo does not offer inflight entertainment or WiFi on any of its flights. The carrier also does not provide food for purchase, meaning passengers must be prepared before their flight if they want something to enjoy during the duration. Travelers can purchase food at the airport before their departure and download movies or TV shows onto their electronic devices so they can have them onboard. Additionally, it is recommended that passengers bring a portable charger, as the airline does not have any AC power or USB ports on its aircraft.
“Avelo Airlines does not include planes with in-seat power. Therefore, you must have an ample supply of fully charged batteries, plus three hours of extra battery time for the flight,”
the carrier said.
“In case of electronic equipment failure or unforeseen delays, we recommend that you travel with manually operated backup supplies.”

The airline serves over 50 destinations and is on track for more growth. Next week, it will commence nonstop flights from STS to Kalispell, Montana; Boise, Idaho; and Pasco, Washington and Salem, Oregon – complementing its existing services to BUR, LAS, Palm Springs, and seasonal service to Redmond, OR.
