Exploring The First Jobs Of Young New Yorkers: A Revealing Survey

Have you ever wondered where your fellow residents from New York got their start in the job world? My first “real” job was as an opener at McDonalds in Owego – what about you?

My first “real” job placed me second (fast food worker) on the list with babysitting coming in at #1 at 17%. So what are the other first jobs on the list in the world of work?

A recent survey by Voicenation.com, who are all about answering services, let us know on how young workers are mixing things up when it comes to our first job choices.

Here’s the New York first jobs list:

Babysitting: 17%

Fast food worker: 12%

Dishwasher: 11%

Retail Associate: 9%

Newspaper delivery: 6%

It’s interesting to see how these gigs shape the early chapters of our working lives. I was also a newspaper delivery person, so I made the list twice. But what’s the real deal behind why young New Yorkers what the job that they got?

Here’s the lowdown on our motivations to clock in:

For financial independence: 32%

For responsibility: 32%

For work experience: 27%

For personal growth: 17%

For a sense of independence: 17%

I did it to pave my own way in the world and take responsibility for myself. What about you?
