Fairmont earns redemption win over New Ulm

FAIRMONT — After dropping a close 1-0 game at New Ulm this past Thursday, the Fairmont Cardinals got plenty of run support Tuesday in a home rematch with the Eagles.

With 10 hits and just one error on defense, the Cardinals rolled to an 8-4 win over the Eagles in a Big South Conference baseball game at Herb Wolf Field.

Joe Long led the way in the win with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. One of those hits was a double and he also drove in a pair of runs.

Josh Soelter was 2 for 3 also for Fairmont, while Joseph Crissinger was 2 for 3 with a a double and an RBI and Luke Haefner was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Merritt Pomerenke was 1 for 2 with two runs scored also for Fairmont, while Tyler Kurt added an RBI.

Soelter also got the win on the mound in 6 1/3 innings of work, giving up five hits and three walks for three earned runs while striking out four.

Fairmont scored single runs in the third and fourth innings before taking a 6-0 run in the fifth. The Cardinals added two more runs in the sixth. New Ulm scored all four of its runs in the fourth, but the Cardinals’ defense was able to get the final two outs to conserve the win.

Benjamin Moeller pitched 2/3 innings in relief of Soelter and allowed one earned run on three hits.

Blaine Olson took the loss for New Ulm in four innings, allowing four hits and four walks for one earned run. Lucas Suess was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks to lead New Ulm at the plate, while Tanner Backer was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

PREP SOFTBALL

St. Peter 4, Fairmont 0

FAIRMONT — St. Peter shut out Fairmont 4-0 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference softball game.

St. Peter scored three runs in the top of the first inning and that was all it needed, taking advantage of four walks and a single. It scored the last run in the fourth on an RBI groundout.

Nevaeh Rahm took the loss in four innings, allowing four runs on one hit while striking out six. Brylee Miller pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Rahm, allowing one hit and two walks while fanning one. Gabby Leiding and Ilana Moeller each singled twice to lead Fairmont at the plate.

Fairmont (10-10) awaits section playoffs next and will host an opponent to be determined at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

Fairmont boys take

1st in Worthington

WORTHINGTON — The Fairmont boys track and field team finished first out of eight Class AA teams at the Worthington Trojan Relays on Tuesday with a 146.5 points.

The Fairmont girls took second in the Class AA girls division out of eight teams with 129.5 points behind Marshall (143).

Leading the Fairmont boys, Jeremiah Lebbi took first in the 100 (11.31), Gavin Artner took second in the 1,600 (4:31.19) and Jaron Schutz took second in the 300 hurdles (43:07). The Fairmont boys 4×100 relay team of Elijah Johnson, Allon Chen, Lebbi and Blaze Geiger took second (44.45), while the boys 4×200 relay team of Nolan Schultze, Caleb Chambers, Josiah Hoye and Gage Borntrager took second (1:33.50). In the boys shot put, Fairmont’s Hank Artz took third (46-5.75), while teammate Oliver Tordsen took second in the discus (153-11). Fairmont’s Tytan Tumbleson took first in the high jump (6-0), while teammate Borntrager took first in the pole vault (12-0).

Fairmont’s Nelson Remington took first in the wheelchair 100 (16.27, PR), first in the wheelchair 800 (2:05.97) and first in the wheelchair 1,600 (4:26.33).

For the Fairmont girls, Harper Artz took third in the 400 (1:02.58), Macy Hanson took first in the 3,200 (11:48.21) and Cadence Leiding took third in the 100 hurdles (17.25). Leiding also took first in the 300 hurdles, while her teammate Bella Schroeder took second (51.41). The Fairmont girls 4×200 relay team of Bella Larson, Emelia Klanderud, Leiding and Artz took first (1:50.50). Also for the Fairmont girls, Ellie Ortega took first in the shot put (36-1), while Abbie Simpson
