Amazon’s hotly anticipated post-apocalyptic series “Fallout,” based on the popular video game franchise that got its start in 1997, has finally started streaming.

Cue the arguments and discussion over spoilers, answers to long-debated mysteries and complaints over the series, which has been called “‘Dr. Strangelove’ meets ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.'”

One of the more interesting post-release explorations of the series was the creation of an interactive overlay for Google Earth that shows the “real-life” locations of the survival shelters — including one in central Kentucky.

What is the premise of the ‘Fallout’ show and what are the vaults?

“Fallout” is a series from “Westworld” creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy of Kilter Films that follows a resident of a fallout shelter who emerges 200 years after a nuclear war to explore a ravaged, unrecognizable America.

Those with wealth were able to survive a nuclear war in 2077 by taking refuge in bunkers purchased from a company known as Vault-Tec. The utopian underground luxury “vaults” provide a stunning contrast to the irradiated wasteland above ground that spawned a wild, lawless society.

How did a ‘Fallout’ fan figure out where the vaults are?

The final episode of the season shows a map of the vaults during an important meeting at Vault-Tec HQ, explained Adele Ankers-Range, a freelance writer for video game news site IGN.

“It didn’t take long for viewers to spot the map and put their cartography skills to good use, with one fan going by the name of @Tunnelsnakefool on X/Twitter plotting out all the U.S. vaults in the image from the show,” Ankers-Range wrote.

The overlay map shows Louisville as a city of note and shows one vault in the commonwealth in the area of Frankfort.

Other vault locations appear to be in Cincinnati, Columbus, Nashville and many in West Virginia. None appear to be in Indiana.

Deep dive into mapping of vaults shows location in … Frankfort?

Tunnelsnakesfool, a self-proclaimed game nerd, quickly put together a YouTube video explaining her process. She noted the Kentucky vault is some where in between Louisville and Lexington, adding “it’s a big dot, so it’s imperfect …”

Kentuckians, though, clearly understand why the dot appears to be in Frankfort as it’s the capital of the commonwealth — despite having a smaller population than the two surrounding cities.

How to watch ‘Fallout’

“Fallout” debuted April 10 on Amazon Prime, which requires a membership. Amazon released all of the episodes at once, so you can stream the entire first season.

Amazon announced that it is also offering discounted memberships through Prime Access, which is for those who use certain government assistance programs, as well as through Prime Student for those enrolled in higher education.
