At Florida A&M University (FAMU), fashion is not just about style—it’s a way of life. With homecoming around the corner, FAMU students are facing a choice between thrifting or buying new clothes to showcase their best looks.

Clothing prices have increased by 4.5% over the past year, according to a 2023 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This has significantly impacted how students approach their fashion choices. For college students managing tight budgets, every dollar counts. For some, this has meant a shift toward shopping on a budget.

Ava Ellis, a third-year biology major shares her motivation behind thrifting.

“Thrifting is not only a hobby but a great way to find good, designer, and vintage clothing at reasonable prices,” Ellis said. “Budgeting is important, but the unique style is really why I thrift.”

Many FAMU students appreciate the affordability and sustainability of thrift shopping. With the environmental impact of fast fashion becoming clearer, thrifting has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative.

On the other side of the fashion spectrum, there are students who remain loyal to buying new for the freshness and modernity offers. First-year nursing student Mia Johnson values quality over quantity when it comes to her fashion choices.

“When you’re thrifting, the clothes are preowned and often wear out quicker,” Johnson said. “I shop at Amazon, SHEIN, and Fashion Nova. They have deals comparable to thrift stores, but the quality is better, and the items last longer.”

Both perspectives reflect the diverse approaches FAMU students take toward fashion. Thrifting offers budget-friendly, unique finds, while buying new ensures quality and the latest trends. As students prepare for homecoming, fashion will be front and center—whether it’s through vintage gems or fresh modern pieces.

Beyond the football game and events, homecoming is a time for FAMU students to express their pride and creativity through fashion. The choice between thrifting and buying new is a personal one. Individual style, values, and budget all play a role. Whether sporting something old or something new, one thing is clear: FAMU students know how to make a fashion statement, especially during homecoming. This mix of old and new fashions reflects the dynamic culture that defines Florida A&M University.
