Fashion retailer to close all of its stores including ones in Macomb and Oakland counties
Fashion retailer rue21 has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a third time and is closing all of its over 500 stores, including four outlets in Macomb and Oakland counties.
Reuters reported the teen apparel shop plans to close the approximate 540 stores within the next two months while advertising “going out of business” sales, according to court documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.
The retailer, which also plans to sell its intellectual property, has not issued a press release or commented publicly on the bankruptcy as of Monday. The company’s website said it was “being updated” and invited visitors to check back later.
Court records show the retailer has 19 properties in Michigan, including:
- Macomb Mall, 32335 Gratiot Ave. Roseville
- Hoover Eleven Shopping Center, 26269 Hoover Road, Warren
- Oakland Mall, 340 W 14 Mile Road, Troy
- Great Lakes Crossing, 4000 Baldwin Road, Auburn Hills
According to USA Today, this is not the first time the retailer based in Warrendale, Penn. has filed for bankruptcy, previously filing in 2003 and 2017, when it closed 400 stores and cut about $700 million in debt. Reuters reported rue21 currently has approximately 4,900 employees and $194.4 million in debt.
Court documents show rue21 attempted to sell its business, but none of the bids were as much as could be earned through shutting down its stores and liquidating its inventory.
The retailer operated for the last 44 years under the motto that “fashion should be fun and accessible to all.” In 2013, rue’s peak year, the company had 1,000 stores. After filing for bankruptcy in 2017, it closed 400 “underperforming” locations and renegotiated store leases.
It is the latest retailer to file for bankruptcy and close stores.
In April, longtime mall retailer Express filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced it is closing approximately 95 Express retail stores and all of the brand’s UpWest stores.
