Fashion takes center stage at Logan County Fair

Floral skirts, watermelon-themed outfits, prom dresses and western wear were among the styles shown off at this year’s Logan County Fair 4-H Fashion Revue held Friday evening at Sterling Middle School. The
Participants in four divisions decorated or constructed a garment and then modeled it. The judging was based on posture, poise, grooming, attitude and the outfit on the model. This includes becomingness to the model, choice of texture, color and style, fit, and accessories.
Judges for the event were Sharon Blackham and Breann Schwartz and the emcee was Heather Brungardt.
This year’s winner in the Junior Division was Kate Tribbett. For her first year in clothing construction, she wanted to sew a skirt and knew exactly what kind of fabric pattern she wanted to use, a fun watermelon design in honor of her grandfather and great-grandfather who raised watermelon. Tribbett worked hard this year learning how to use her sewing machine that her grandmother gave her a few years ago, she also learned how to cut out a pattern, hand stitch and rib out mistakes.
She paired her new skirt with a white t-shirt with appliqued watermelon on the front and a matching watermelon ribbon in her hair. Tribbett also made a matching skirt for her American Girl doll with her grandmother’s help and added a watermelon button to the shirt and a watermelon ribbon in her hair.
Reserve Champion in the Junior Division was Mya Friend. For her third year in clothing construction, she chose to sew a summery pink dress, paired with simple and summery jewelry and shoes to make the dress a go-to for everyday comfort while still looking trendy. Friend’s favorite part of sewing the dress was learning how to sew a zipper. She likes challenging herself in fun and new ways and sewing gives her an opportunity to do that.
Other competitors in the Junior Division were Kirby Befus, Brennyn Kailey and Charlie Wright.
The Intermediate Division Champion was Paisley Alderson. For her third year in 4-H, she purchased a plain blue 100% cotton red sheet from Goodwill and blue thread and used white lace she already had on hand, upcycling the bed sheet into a perfect summer dress with lace on the bottom. She noted that it is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency that the majority of donated cloth items never find any owner but instead, 84% end up in a landfill, which is likely what would have happened to the bed sheet had she not used it.
To make the dress Alderson found a sewing tutorial on YouTube. After the dress was constructed she decided to add the white lace. Paired with the dress were white leather sandals, a blue bow in her hair and a pearl necklace she borrowed from her mom.
Intermediate Reserve Champion was Remi Gerlach, who is in her third year of clothing construction. While she modeled two outfits, she won for the denim jacket she remodeled, inspired by Pinterest.
Gerlach started by shopping for a jacket that would work for her idea and found one at Goodwill that already had fun fringe on it. The perfect fabric was found at Joan’s Fabrics. She cut out the sections of the jacket she wanted to change and fitted the new fabric in those spots. It was all adhered with fabric glue.
Cutting the new fabric was the trickiest part of the project for Gerlach because it was very delicate. She is very happy and proud of the finished product. It was paired with a black blouse, stylish western jeans and boots and simple accessories.
Other competitors in the Intermediate Division were Lilly Johnson and Peyton Veik.
The Senior Division Champion was Mattea Pelton. The eighth-year 4-H member won her choice of wool fabric at the 2023 Colorado Make It with Wool Competition and found a beautiful pack in shades of burnt orange, Mediterranean blue, mocha and sand and dubbed it the sunset wool. She used it to make a wrapped jacket with a chic cowl neck and found a burnt orange wool mix to make a chic dress with a high neck to go with the jacket.
Even with her sewing experience, this outfit presented several challenges. Because there are so many curves to the jacket it took almost Pelton an entire day just to lay out the wool with the pattern pieces, as she had to envision how each piece would drape and curve to keep the lines of the plaid lined up. The cowl neck was very tricky too and multiple open darts on the dress had to be resewn until they were just right. In several places, she had to use a hand needle.
Pelton added a vintage button on the front for decoration of the jacket, two clear snaps on the outside layer to fasten the jacket, and paired the outfit with gold earrings, a gold cuff and burnt leather heels with low-cut edging.
The Reserve Champion in the Senior Division was Ayla Baney. She modeled two outfits and won for a skirt and shirt outfit.
Baney decided to start her project simple, with a black, flowy button-down shirt and paired it with a floor-length pink floral skirt that popped out at her while shopping. The outfit was versatile enough for both casual and formal occasions. To elevate the look she chose a pair of new heels with simple jewelry including a delicate necklace and subtle earrings.
Coming in third was Ashton Nichols, who wore two outfits as well. It was her hand-painted flower denim skirt that got her the award, a wearable piece of art.
The vibrant colors and intricate details evoked the freshness of a blooming garden. The skirt was a classic silhouette with a modern twist thanks to the floral designs. Paired with the skirt was a white floral lace shirt made of polyester and spandex, a soft white cotton camisole underlay and light green Nike dunks.
Pelton, Baney and Nichols will represent Logan County at the Colorado State Fair.
Other competitors in the Senior Division included Natalie Adels, Elliana Pelton and Piper Withers.
The Encore Division Champion was Ashton Nichols. She wore a 100% cotton rust-colored short dress that featured an off-the-shoulder design “ideal for making a statement at any summer party or fall festival.” It included a playful ruffled hem that added a touch of whimsy “perfect for dancing the night away or strolling around the county fair” and a bodice that created a stunning silhouette. Nichols paired the outfit with a silver and white opal metal belt, high-rise dress boots, feathered dangly earrings and a stylish hat.
Reserve Champion in the Encore Division was Elliana Pelton, who participated in the judging in the afternoon but was unable to attend the show in the evening due to a volleyball tournament. She wore royal blue, gold and black shortalls that she made for her clothing project, with a black ribbed short-sleeve shirt, light gold dress sneakers and blue and gold jewelry that she made herself.
Other competitors in the Encore Division included Natalie Adels, Briar Alderson, Paisley Alderson, McKrai Dennison, Remi Gerlach, Braya Kailey, Kate Tribbett, Piper Withers and Charlie Wright.
Along with the models in the judged categories, the show also featured the 2024 royalty and 2025 contestants.
