Field Hockey Travels to Instate Foes – William & Mary Athletics
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary field hockey continues its difficult stretch to start the 2024 season when it hits the road for a pair of matches against in-state rivals this week.
The Tribe travels to No. 12 Liberty on Friday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m., before heading to former league counterpart James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
Tribe News and Notes
– Liberty will be the Tribe’s fourth nationally-ranked opponent in the first five matches of the season. W&M has already faced current No. 4 Duke, No. 7 Harvard, and No. 18 Old Dominion. The Green and Gold travels to No. 3 Virginia later this season.
– Graduate student goalkeeper Maddie George recorded double-digit save efforts in all three Tribe games against nationally-ranked foes this season. She leads the country in saves per game at 12 per contest. George posted 10 at Duke, before totaling 15 against Harvard and 11 against ODU last week.
– Senior midfielder Pyper Friedman has both Tribe goals this season, scoring against Richmond and Old Dominion. Her goal against the Monarchs last week was her first career penalty stroke. Friedman leads active Tribe players with 13 career goals.
– As a team, the Tribe leads the country in saves at 12 per game.
– W&M leads the CAA and ranks third nationally in defensive saves on the season with four. Sophomores Mackinzie Brown and Emme Schwartz are tied for the CAA lead with two defensive saves apiece.
– George ranks among the top Tribe goalkeepers in school history. She currently ranks seventh in saves (257) and shutouts (9), eighth in wins (24), 10th in saves per game (4.67), 15th in save % (.712), and 19th in GAA (2.05).
– The Tribe and the Flames meet for the fourth-straight season. Liberty leads the all-time series with the Tribe at 3-2, but W&M has won two of the three meetings in Lynchburg. The Flames won last season in Williamsburg by a 2-0 scoreline. The Green and Gold upset then-No. 6 Liberty, 1-0, in overtime during the 2022 season.
– W&M and JMU square off for the 52nd consecutive season and the 87th time overall. The Dukes lead the all-time series 47-29-10, including a 22-10-4 mark in Harrisonburg. JMU opened last season with a 4-2 win over the Tribe in Williamsburg.
