Final preparations underway for World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Final preparations are ongoing on Main Street in downtown Springfield for the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast, where hundreds of people are expected to pack in for pancakes.

Barricades have been placed on Main Street at the intersections with Bridge Street and State Street. They were placed beginning at 10 a.m. Friday as tables were put in place, so hundreds can just sit down and enjoy both flapjacks and each other’s company.

Also Friday, pancake batter was prepared at Mercy Medical Center, so it can be put on numerous griddles across Main Street as people get on line in the morning and have fresh pancakes on their plates.

What does it take to hold the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast? Simply put: a lot!

“So many people do so much to make this happen. We have three refrigerated trucks that are going to be coming here shortly and then we separate the batter and we put the juice and the milk and everything, so that we have three refrigerated trucks backing up to the tents. It’s a big effort, a lot of donations, and we delivered 67,000 tickets since Monday to Hampden County school children, so we’re hoping a big crowd comes down,” said Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt.

The breakfast is $3 for adults and $1 for children as many can devour pancakes, as well as bacon that was prepared on Wednesday by the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department.

Because of the barricades and all of the setup, you may be wondering about traffic. Right now, you can cross Main Street from Boland Way to Harrison Avenue and you can travel down Court Street to City Hall Place and back to East Columbus Avenue.

At 4 a.m. Saturday, the following roads will be closed

  • Main Street from State Street to Bridge Street
  • Boland Way and Harrison Avenue
  • Court Street
  • City Hall Place

As for parking, there have been “No Parking” signs posted and enforced in areas of the event. If you need a place to park your vehicle, you can either park for free at MGM Springfield or you can go to the I-91 north and south garages for a $5 flat fee.
