Fire at Knoxville business shuts down road for hours, fire department says
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Knoxville Fire Department said crews were on the scene for hours after a fire at a manufacturing business Wednesday afternoon.
Tim Woods with KFD said crews responded to a fire at Tamko Building Products, located at 2506 Johnson Street, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
The fire started in the lot near the main building, Woods said, adding that smoke and flames could be seen from the interstate.
Although all of the fire was contained to the “cardboard pad,” Woods said fire crews will be working on the scene into most of the night. He also said the fire will smolder for hours.
Additionally, Woods said city crews are on the scene with heavy equipment assisting KFD by moving piles around so they can be extinguished. Off-duty firefighters also had to relieve KFD’s on-duty personnel due to high temperatures and the amount of hours crews spent on scene.
Woods said the main building didn’t suffer any damage, and the Norfolk tracks remain open. However, New York Avenue at Louisiana Avenue and Johnson Street at Louisiana Avenue will be shut down until the scene is clear.
The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time, Woods said.
