Fire On Route 59 Knocks Shorewood Business Out of Commission

SHOREWOOD — For the second time in the last 10 months, the Troy Fire Protection District was dispatched to a significant business fire along Route 59. Last summer’s fire damaged the Doc Motor Works auto repair service.

Thursday’s early morning blaze caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the Best Hybrid Battery company, according to Troy Fire Chief Paul Hertzmann.

The fire chief pointed out that although one of the signs on the building reads Doc Motor Works, Doc Motor Works occupies the service bays on the other end of the structure from where the fire happened. The overnight fire means that the sections occupied by Best Hybrid Battery are not suitable for occupancy. They are now boarded up and the fire remains under investigation.

According to the fire chief for Troy, Best Hybrid handles battery replacements for Tesla vehicles.

He said Troy was notified of the emergency as the result of the building’s fire alarms going off.

According to the Facebook post from Troy Fire, at 2:20 a.m., the fire department responded to an activated fire alarm in the 18600 block of Route 59. Crews arrived to smoke showing from a commercial building.

Mutual aid companies from Plainfield, Minooka, Channahon, Lockport and East Joliet assisted at the scene. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Last July, Patch reported that the Doc Motor Works auto repair service business along Route 59 in Shorewood sustained major damage from a fire that broke out just before dinner time Friday.

The fire to the commercial auto repair shop caused approximately $350,000 in damage to the business. A metal pole barn went up in flames around 4:40 p.m.
