First Alert: Slick Travel Conditions Ahead
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Dry weather returns Thursday night into early Friday. Overnight lows will dip into the single digits above zero, followed by daytime highs in the 20s to low 30s on Friday. While the day starts off mostly dry, it’ll stay fairly cloudy as the next storm system approaches.
Your First Alert: Icy Conditions Possible
On Friday, a low-pressure system is expected to develop to our southeast and track northeastward, likely passing near the Iowa-Missouri border. Ahead of this system, moisture will push into the area, leading to freezing rain and drizzle late Friday evening into Saturday morning.
As the system strengthens, it will pull in warmer air, transitioning much of the area to rain by Saturday. Slick roads are likely. Current indications suggest temperatures will climb above freezing in many areas by Saturday afternoon.
Any ice accumulation could quickly create travel problems. While precipitation amounts are still uncertain due to the system’s track and timing, poor travel conditions are possible across much of the viewing area Friday night into early Saturday. If you have travel plans, consider adjusting them—leaving earlier on Friday or later on Saturday might be wise.
Your First Alert: Active Weather Continues
Sunday offers a break from the wet weather, with mostly cloudy skies, lighter winds, and milder temperatures. Lows will range from the upper 20s to low 30s, with highs reaching the upper 30s to low 40s. Looking ahead to early next week, rain appears likely on Monday as another storm system moves through. Temperatures should stay warm enough for mostly rain during the daytime. Cooler air returns Tuesday, dropping highs back into the 30s and lows into the 20s for the rest of the week.
By Wednesday, yet another system could bring snow to the Midwest. While it’s too early to pinpoint specifics, it’s a period to watch closely as the forecast develops. Stay with us for the latest on this active stretch of weather!
