First Alert Weather Day for snow, difficult travel conditions

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – We have made it to the first big snow storm of the season!! While some communities in the Northwoods have had higher totals due to lake effect snowfall, this is the first time that moderate snowfall is going to be widespread.

We still have as much as 4-6″ of snow in the forecast for most of north central Wisconsin. Expect a difficult commute home from work tonight.

Snowfall will arrive in the morning and continue all day. During the afternoon and evening (about 12-8 PM) is when the heaviest snow is set to occur. At times, snow could fall at more than an inch per hour. By the end of Thursday or early Friday, snowfall totals are expected to top out around 4-6″ between Highway 64 and Highway Highway 10 with a couple communities possibly getting in the 6-8″ range. Anyone in the far Northwoods and further south is looking at about 2-4″ or so.

Our greatest travel impacts will come on the afternoon & evening commute today. Slippery spots are still expected for Friday morning, but not quite as many. Road conditions will improve heading into this weekend. This is also when we will have our coldest temperatures over the next week.

After today, our next Weathermaker will arrive on Monday. This is our only other chance for snow before Christmas. It is still a little early to tell exact snowfall totals with this system, but snowfall is likely going to be less than what we pick up today. Stay tuned for updates. After this, mild weather returns for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Neither day will be as warm as last year though.
