Time to get fit

A Little Backstory

So, this review was meant to be up a couple of weeks ago, but then little miss clumsy over here (that’s me, in case you didn’t already guess) went and slipped two discs, so I’ve been out of action for a little while.

I hate letting a review go unwritten, so I enlisted my 11-year-old to help me. Apparently, he’s not easily bribed by sweets, or a mention in this review (when did kids start driving such a hard bargain?) He was easily bribed with a new video game, though (like mother, like son, I guess!), so this review is a collaborative effort between us both (him doing all the practical work and telling me his thoughts along the way, and me writing them more coherently.

A Unique Collaboration

Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku is a unique collaboration between the popular Vocaloid character Hatsune Miku and three other Vocaloid from Crypton Future Media – Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, and Megurine Luka. This game combines boxing with music to create a fun and engaging workout experience. In addition to the regular workout mode, Miku Boxing also includes a special ‘Miku Exercise’ mode where players can follow along with a variety of Vocaloid songs while punching, jabbing, and ducking.

Exercise options may vary

An Array of Options

I was so excited to try Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku, but I had to live vicariously through my 11-year-old. What we both loved was the array of differing options. You can change the exercise intensity, the music used, and the difficulty. This means that this game is suitable for beginners as well as more seasoned boxing enthusiasts.

This is actually the first time we’ve tried any sort of console fitness game, so my 11-year-old chose to start with very beginner-friendly settings. I always find that with these types of things, it’s better to start slowly!

Stats galore

Power Through Stats

I’m a sucker for statistics (as is my 11-year-old, which is probably where he gets it from!), so being able to see how many calories were burned, how many combos were made and how many hits and misses there were and then gives you your fitness age and what your score was.

One thing my 11-year-old noted was that he would have liked more male characters. He felt like he lacked choice when it came to a character who represented him, and he would have liked to have seen more male counterparts.

Right hook, jab!

The Gameplay of Fitness Boxing feat. HATSUNE MIKU

Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku’s gameplay involves using both controllers separately from the main console and using the motion sensors in them so that the game recognises when you are doing the action depicted on the screen. Because of this, the game can only be played in TV mode or table mode and cannot be played on a Switch Lite or played in handheld mode.

We found the game relatively responsive to the controllers and didn’t find it either too sensitive or too rigid in its recognition of user input.

Conclusion

In the words of my 11-year-old, “Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku was a game that I enjoyed, although it was hard trying to time my actions right. I think that is something I just need to practice. I wish there were more male characters, but I did enjoy the game.”

I’m incredibly sad that I didn’t get to try the game for myself due to my slipped discs, but I’m looking forward to giving it a whirl when I’m better. Hopefully, I’ll update this review with my own thoughts when I’m able to, but for now, I hope that my 11-year-old’s thoughts are enough. Thanks to my 11-year-old “Dex” for being a good sport.
