Fitness franchise Workout Anytime eyeing expansion in Tallahassee area

‘We want our gym to be the Cheers of the gym space,’ a company spokesperson said.

National fitness operation Workout Anytime is on the hunt for the perfect location to introduce its business in the Big Bend, and recently representatives have been working with local brokers to find the right spot.

The company, founded in the early 1970s by John Quattrocchi and Steve Strickland, is scouting for the new location in areas like Woodville and Bradfordville, as well as Midway in Gadsden County.

Director of Franchise Development Terri Harof says these are the areas they’ve determined have a great opportunity for growth based on their market research. Unlike many franchises, Workout Anytime prefers locations on the outskirts of cities rather than in the center.

“Typically we look for second-generation opportunities,” Harof said. “So, we’ll look into a shopping center that’s anchored by a grocery store, Dollar General, Goodwill, Big Lots, something like that. We’ll take over a second generation space and then we’ll convert that from whatever it was into Workout Anytime.”

Although there are 200 locations operating in the United States, including 21 in Florida, and plans to have 500 locations by 2029, Harof emphasizes that their goal isn’t to be the biggest fitness franchise. The company strives to service underserved areas, further away from its competitors.

Premium membership plans for Workout Anytime cost $34.99 a month, and the basic membership plan costs $24.99 a month. Harof said the company plans to have a site identified within six months.

Mike King, a franchise owner of four Workout Anytime locations, including his newest one in Venice, says he began franchising with the company in 2017, after working for other corporate fitness companies that required frequent relocation.

“I really wanted to plant my roots in a certain area, rather than move around so much,” King said. “I knew that I knew the industry, but I also knew that I didn’t know what I needed to know to open a business.” He is not planning to be involved in the Big Bend expansion, however.

“When we’re bringing out new franchises, and we’re going through the extensive training that we have with our franchises, the people piece is so important in creating a culture that is warm and inviting,” Harof said.

“We kind of want our gym to be the Cheers’ of the gym space, where our team members have a connection with our members, and our members have a connection with our team members.”

Harof says that Workout Anytime, like other modern centers, highlights recovery after workouts. Its premium members have access to amenities, like a hydromassage, infrared sauna, cryolounge, massage chairs, red light therapy, tanning beds and theraguns.
