Fitness legend Richard Simmons’ cause of death revealed by family: reports

The death of Richard Simmons, who built his career on a popular line of fitness videos in the 1980s, was “accidental,” a family spokesperson confirmed to multiple news outlets Wednesday.

Simmons passed away on July 13 at 76 years old due to “complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor,” according to a statement provided by his family to People and other news outlets.

A toxicology report determined Simmons did not have any substances or medications in his system that he did not have a prescription for, according to a story published by 6abc Action News.

“The Family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss,” the statement included.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner told ABC News, “The cause of death and report are not yet finalized, and the report has not been released.”
