Flappy Bird Is Coming Home to Roost on iPhone, 10 Years After Disappearing
Remember Flappy Bird? The side-scrolling iPhone game, which spawned many, many imitators, was a sensation for its simple, but tough gameplay. And then it went away, pulled by its creator Dong Nguyen in 2014. At the time, he promised to bring back a better version, but that never materialized.
While the game lives on in emulators and in arcades as a ticket game, the original game is finally flying back to iPhones as a community project from a group that bought the rights to the title. The game will be available on iOS, Android and other platforms.
A trailer for the re-hatched version shows news clips from when the game became a viral sensation and promises that “Flappy Bird will fly again.” The game will feature additional characters, secrets, modes such as a basketball hoop-shooting option, and additional environments, according to the video and website.
An X social media account post, ostensibly authored by Flappy Bird, reads, “I AM BACK!! Just a decade ago, I was the talk of the town and soaring to new heights with my 100 million friends. Sadly, I had to leave the fame and spotlight behind to go home and find out who I really am. Thanks to my super Flappy Bird fans, I’m refreshed, reinvigorated, and ready to soar again. The decade-long mission involved acquiring legal rights and even working with my predecessor to uncage me and re-hatch the official Flappy Bird game!”
