Florida evacuees travel to Hoover for safety

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – As evacuees from Florida find refuge here in Alabama, WBRC spoke to some families about how they’re holding up after that devastating storm.

Eunice and Michael Green traveled from Perry, Florida to Hoover in their RV.

They said this hasn’t been easy for them, leaving behind their home, jobs and community, but they say they are grateful to have found a safe place to stay at Hoover RV Park.

“We definitely feel very fortunate because of where we come from is a very poverty stricken area, there are so many people worse off, I just can’t complain,” Eunice Green said.

This isn’t the first hurricane the Green’s have experienced, but they said this one felt different and they didn’t want to take any chances.

“So we decided to get a camper and leave because it’s the only way for sure you could take your pets with you because we have two large cats and one dog and we weren’t going to leave the pets,” Michael Green said.

Not sure of what they will find when they get back, the Green’s say they are trying to stay positive.

“Last night, we were pretty much watching the news the entire time to see how affected our area would be. We had a neighbor pass by our house and let us know our house was intact, so that was a lot of stress off of us,” Eunice Green said.

As far as help and resources, the Green’s ask if anyone is willing to lend a helping hand to please do so.

“We just want to say, you know don’t forget us even though we are a very low populated area. Some families have been in Taylor County for over 100 years so it’s really not just property,” Eunice Green said.

The Green’s have been getting updates from family members back home who say 99% of the county is out of power so they plan to stay here for a few more days before getting back on the road.
