Florida Gateway College welcomes new E-sports head coach

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The new head coach of Florida Gateway College’s e-sports has big plans for the team.

FGC’s e-sports team finished their 2023 season undefeated and placed second in the national playoffs.

Colby Thompson was the former assistant coach for the team and began coaching after wrapping up a successful playing career for the Timberwolves. Thompson made history as the first e-sports athlete signed to FGC.

“In the past, we’ve had a lot of titles we completed in,” Thompson said. “I really wanted to reduce that down and make sure we’re getting those top quality players going forward.”

Thompson also serves as the administrative specialist for the college’s office of enrollment and marketing. He will officially start as head coach in the fall semester.
