Flying to the U.K. in 2025? Don’t Forget Your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)!

Planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2025? Whether you’re jetting off to London to visit Big Ben or heading to the Scottish Highlands for an adventure, there’s an important new travel requirement you need to know about, as some travelers will now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding their flight.

What Is an ETA?

The ETA is a quick and easy online travel authorization designed to enhance border security. It’s required for travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States, who are visiting the U.K. for tourism, business, or short-term studies. This new system aims to provide more efficient processing and pre-screening of travelers before they arrive at U.K. borders.

When Does It Go into Effect?

Starting January 8, 2025, all U.S. travelers must obtain an ETA before entering the U.K. If you’re planning a trip in 2025, it’s crucial to apply in advance to ensure a smooth travel experience.

How Do You Apply?

Applying for an ETA is easy:

  1. Visit the Official U.K. ETA Website or Download the UK ETA App on Your Phone: Apply for an ETA online here. You can download the app for iOS here and the app for Androids here.
  2. Provide Your Details: Submit basic personal information, travel plans, and a valid passport.
  3. Pay the Fee: The ETA costs £10 (approximately $13 USD).
  4. Receive Approval: Most applications are processed within 3 business days, but it’s recommended to apply at least a week before your travel date.

Once approved, your ETA is electronically linked to your passport and remains valid for up to two years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. If you’re planning multiple trips to the U.K. within this period, you won’t need to reapply until your ETA.

What’s the Difference Between an ETA and a Visa?

It’s important to understand that an ETA is not the same as a visa. Here are the key differences:

  • Eligibility: The ETA is for citizens of visa-exempt countries, such as the U.S., who are visiting the U.K. for short stays (up to six months) for tourism, business, or study. A visa is required for individuals traveling for longer periods or for purposes like work or long-term study.
  • Application Process: The ETA application is entirely online, making it a quicker and simpler option than a visa, which often requires more documentation, in-person appointments, and longer processing times.
  • Cost: The ETA costs significantly less than most visa applications.
  • Duration: An ETA is valid for two years or until the linked passport expires, allowing multiple trips to the U.K. during this period. A visa’s validity and terms depend on the type issued.

Who Needs an ETA?

All travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, must apply. If you’re unsure whether you need an ETA, you can check your eligibility on the official U.K. government website.

Children of all ages, including infants, require their own ETA if they are nationals of a country where ETAs apply.

Tips for Travelers

  1. Double-Check Your Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay. Since the ETA is linked to your passport, you’ll need to reapply if you renew your passport before traveling.
  2. Keep a Copy of Your Approval: While your ETA is electronically linked to your passport, it’s a good idea to save a copy of your approval for reference.
