Folks ‘shop small’ for Small Business Saturday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The Saturday after Thanksgiving has become known as Small Business Saturday.
The day is part of a campaign started by American Express to support family-owned businesses in the United States.
“Small businesses will generally make their year during the holiday season, so it’s really important that we focus on it,” said Betsy Rowell, Downtown Hattiesburg Association interim director.
“In the years since its beginning, over $200 billion have been spent in small businesses and the number last year, over 64 million people shopped small on Small Business Saturday.”
The first Small Business Saturday was observed in November 2010.
“I’ve actually worked at a small business, and I support small businesses always, by making sure that our money funnels to the people of the town,” said Angela Manangan, who shopped at T-Bones Records & Cafe Saturday.
Mik Davis, record store manger for T-Bones Records & Cafe, is thankful for the focus on Small Business Saturday.
“We appreciate all the support that we get from the community, from the colleges, from the hospitals, from everyone, and without that, it would be so much harder to be a small business.” he said.
