Fon du Lac Park District opens new ‘fitness court’

EAST PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Push up, pull up, jumping and jazzercise. That’s just a few activities the community is now able to do at the new Fon du Lac fitness court.

“You can do any level of fitness on it,” said Craig Weigle, Fon du Lac Park District’s executive director. “You can start novice intermediate to the hardcore stuff. You can spend seven minutes, you can do a 14-minute routine or you can do a routine on the studio [platform] to music.”

A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday morning for the fitness court which is located near the district’s administration building. Demonstrations of both sides of the court were shown.

On the platform side, a jazzercise routine was performed to show how exercise classes will look when they are held there.

On the bodyweight exercise side, a crew from Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping in East Peoria went through and did each possible workout the course provides. Each member of the crew went head to head against each other in a timed demonstration of individual workouts.

As far as where the money came from to make this, a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois helped to offset some of the costs for the district. That covered the costs of the concrete. The playground was funded by money the park district had already allotted.

Weigle said the process was not very long in getting the park from blueprints to on land.

“It took about a year between just starting talking, getting the grant approved, and then our park board was excited to bring it to East Peoria,” said Weigle.

Weigle said the park is intended for anybody 14 years old and up.
