Former KCPD officer jailed for deadly shopping center shooting

KANSAS CITY — A Former Kansas City Police officer has been charged in a deadly shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Walmart in Kansas City.

Taquiza Johnson, 47,  is charged with second-degree murder and Armed Criminal Action, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte’.

Just after 4p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a shooting in the 8600 block of North Boardwalk Avenue, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

First responders found a man later identified as 71-year-old Ronald Barnett suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.The initial investigation indicates that the shooting followed a verbal dispute in the parking lot of Walmart, according to DiMartino.

Online jail records do not list a bond amount for Johnson.
