The Fort Cavazos Transition Assistance Program, known as TAP, is hosting its biannual Mega Career Fair on Tuesday, June 11. The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lone Star Conference Center, 24th Street, Building 5764, on post. It is the largest event of its type hosted by the U.S. military.
The companies in attendance are looking to fill over 3 million positions, which Jerry Hernandez, marketing manager for TAP, said is the most opportunities ever offered by the Fort Cavazos fair.
Officials said 185 different companies are scheduled to be in attendance. Potential employers range from local organizations such as the cities of Temple and Harker Heights to multinational corporations like Dell and General Dynamics. Companies are coming from across the United States and even other countries. State and national governmental organizations such as the Office of the Texas Governor, Office of the Texas Attorney General, U.S Customs and Border Patrol, U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. State Department will be in attendance.
Hernandez said more companies would have come to the event, but the conference center does not have room to support additional vendors and there is not a bigger venue available at Fort Cavazos.
In addition to companies looking for new employees, 19 support agencies will be in attendance. Those agencies include the Texas Workforce Commission and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. While they are not specifically looking to hire transitioning soldiers or veterans, they can provide helpful resources for job seekers.
The fair is aimed at soldiers soon getting out of the military and veterans, but is also open to military spouses and members of the local community. In the past, the event has attracted as many as 5,000 job seekers from Fort Cavazos and the surrounding areas.
