Four Tops Singer Alexander Morris Sues Hospital For Discrimination
Four Tops member Alexander Morris is suing a Michigan hospital, claiming that staff stopped medical treatments for his heart issue. Morris was then sent to a psych evaluation after he informed a member of the medical staff that he was a singer for the Motown group. According to court documents, he has filed a lawsuit in a federal Michigan court against Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital in Warren. The singer stated that he arrived at the hospital’s emergency room seeking treatment for difficulty breathing and chest pain. Morris claims he was removed from oxygen, put in a restraining jacket and forced into a psych evaluation after staff learned he was in the group. He is suing on the grounds of racial discrimination, negligence, battery, false imprisonment and infliction of emotional distress. This abuses the Americans with Disabilities Act and Civil Rights Acts of 1964, and Morris is seeking up to $75,000 in damages as well as a jury trial. He claims the hospital staff “wrongfully assumed he was mentally ill when he revealed his identity as a celebrity figure” and racially profiled him. “The health, safety and well-being of our patients, associates and community members remains our top priority. We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity… We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind,” stated a Macomb Oakland Hospital spokesperson.
