Calvin Mentzer and Landon Hollenshead won the Summit Invite.

CRESSON — Two childhood friends from Franklin County held on against a strong field to win the 31st Summit Invitational on Sunday. After a strong first round of 9-under par 63 on Saturday, the team of Landon Hollenshead and Calvin Mentzer followed with a final round of 69 to finish three shots clear of the field.

Three teams finished in a tie for second place at 9-under, 135 — Ryan DelBaggio/Derrick Soellner, Josh Leibfreid/Andrew Ferguson and Mike Macionsky/Sean Brannan.

“Landon and I played really well yesterday,” Mentzer said. “We started on the back-nine and birdied 16, 17 and 18. We kept it going on the front with birdies on one, two and three for six in a row.”

The team closed with birdies on the seventh and ninth holes to finish Saturday’s round at 63, with a three-shot lead over Mike Macionsky and Sean Brannan.

“Today we got off to a rocky start,” Hollenshead said. “We didn’t get our first birdie until the ninth hole.”

A solid back-nine, with birdies on the 14th and 18th holes, eventually sealed a three-shot victory for Hollenshead and Mentzer, their first win at the Summit Invitational. In recent years, the team has also recorded victories at Down River and Mount Union ALCC.

“Landon and I have known each other since we were kids,” Mentzer said. “Our grandfathers would drive each of us all around Franklin County to compete in junior events, so we’ve played together a long time.”

Mentzer, who lives in Chambersburg, and Hollenshead, from Mercersburg, have been fixtures at area two-balls for several years now and enjoy making the trip to our region.

“There are a lot of quality tournaments in this area and the competition is just great,” Hollenshead said. “And playing with Calvin makes it that much better.”
