Free performance at World’s Fair Park to have puppets, music, circus arts, vertical dance

A free outdoor performance featuring giant puppets, live music, circus arts and vertical dance will be put on at the World’s Fair Park Amphitheater 7-9 p.m. Oct. 11 and 13.

The performance, called “Solastalgia,” is hosted by Cattywampus Puppet Council and One World Circus, a project of Dragonfly Aerial & Circus Arts Studio.

The word “Solastalgia” refers to homesickness for a special place or community that has been disrupted by an outside force, according to a news release. Social and economic instability and the climate crisis will inform some of the show’s themes as it explores grief, hope and connection.

“We see ‘Solastalgia’ not just as a performance but as a call to action,” Lissa McLeod, co-founder of One World Circus and Dragonfly Aerial & Circus Arts Studio, said in a news release. “We hope audiences leave feeling some relief from acknowledging the weight of these times, but also with a sense of strength from their community, their neighbors, and their own potential to make a difference.”

The performance will involve a few locations at World’s Fair Park, concluding with a vertical dance on the side of the Tennessean Hotel.

“As artists, we wanted to create a performance that helps process the complicated emotions surrounding climate change and community challenges,” said Rachel Milford, executive and artistic director of Cattywampus Puppet Council, in a news release “’Solastalgia’ is about recognizing these feelings while also exploring ways we can come together and move forward.”

While attendance is free, the organizations are asking for donations, along with online reservations. You can reserve a free ticket at Cattywampuspuppets.org.
