From making films with phones to Goth stylings, library sessions cater to teens

Two special events for teens are being offered this week at Orleans Parish libraries.

First up, on June 20, those ages 11-18 can join a hands-on class to learn how to use their phones to make films, edit and create content for social media. 

The session will be lead by educators from NOVAC (New Orleans Video Access Center) at the Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Drive.

On June 22, youths ages 11-18 are invited to Latter Memorial Library’s Saturday Soiree with the NOLA Rufflebutts.

The Rufflebutts are an Elegant Gothic Community whose members will teach attendees about EGL as well as Lolita dress, a Japanese fashion influenced by Victorian and Rococo styles.

Stop by between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to meet local Lolitas, learn about the fashion, take photos, and make a DIY bracelet to bring home.

The library is located at 5120 St Charles Ave.

AUTHOR TALK: Celebrated author Tiffany Jewell will visit the New Orleans Public Library via Zoom to discuss her new book, “Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned in School,” on June 20 at 1 p.m.

The New York Times best-seller focuses on the experiences Black and Brown students face from preschool to higher education as a direct result of the inequities built into schools across the United States.

S’MORES AND MORE: Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to Central City Library to build their own solar oven, cook some s’mores and learn the science behind it all with the Louisiana Energy Office.

The fun starts at 2 p.m. on June 20 at the library, 2020 Jackson Ave.

WELLNESS TIME: Ground your body and mind with deep breathing, slow stretching, and gentle strengthening at Norman Mayer Library, 3001 Gentilly Blvd., on June 20 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Each class, taught by T. Duncan, a local writer and wellness educator, includes a guided deep relaxation and is accessible to every body. Limited number of mats are provided. This event is for age 18 and up.

SHROOMS: The All You Need Institute will lead a mushroom-growing workshop at Alvar Library, 913 Alvar St., on June 22.

Starting at 10:30 a.m., participants will learn mushroom-growing techniques including inoculating coffee grounds, paper waste, and straw. Attendees who sign up ahead of time at events.nolalibrary.org will get a free mushroom-growing starter kit.

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE: Children and families can learn beginner moves to the music of Capoeira, a Brazilian dance and martial art .

NOLA Capoeira will host an hourlong workshop on June 22 at 11 a.m. at Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Drive.

SUMMER CHALLENGE: The library’s Summer Fun & Reading Challenge is in full swing. Participants are being challenged to read 800 minutes and complete a variety of library-related activities before July 31. Everyone who signs up gets a registration prize, and those who complete the challenge will receive a tote bag featuring art by local illustrator Tamisha Anthony.
