Gadsden Job Corps Center graduates another class of skilled students
GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – For 60 years, Job Corps has been instrumental in the careers of young men and women. The Gadsden Job Corps Center celebrated those 60 years by graduating another class of men and women.
“Without going to college, you have the opportunity to a primary credential, you have the opportunity to complete a trade,” said Corey Davis.
Gadsden Job Corps Center Director Corey Davis and his staff celebrated students who completed a skill trade with a graduation ceremony. Director Davis says it shows them that they are special by completing a major accomplishment in their lives.
“From the age of 16 to 24 they just want to start a new career for themselves. We have a multitude of different trades for students to come get involved with so when they leave this program, they can transition to fruit for life. They can have high paying jobs,” said Davis.
A partnership with Gadsden State Community College, Program Director John Odom says students can learn a skill and earn a college degree at the same time.
“With us being partnered with Gadsden State and having the understanding with the college allows us to have our students housed here on center. So not only are you graduating from Job Corps but also if you decide to go through our college program you’ll be graduating from Gadsden State as well,” said Odom.
A product of Job Corps himself, John Odom says it laid the foundation for his future.
“So being a Job Corps student, I really want to say that people wonder if Job Corps work. When I spent those three years here on center, it helped me with all the social skills, all of the independent living skills I needed to survive,” said Odom.
