Ganni and Barbour Are Back With Another Dreamy Collaboration
High, low, minimalist, maximalist—half the fun of fashion lies in its duality and the imagined worlds that it can create. Like, what happens when you pair a spunky, megawatt Danish fashion house identified by its ballooning silhouettes and splashy prints with a 130 year-old British heritage label?
Today, Ganni and Barbour have released the third collection from their ongoing partnership. Featuring a tight edit of outerwear and accessories, the 9-piece capsule is equipped for a brisk stroll along the English countryside or a dreamy, horse-drawn carriage ride across the grassy plains of Denmark.
A few standout hero pieces include two delightfully chunky scarves, a sweeping belted trench, and a duffle coat reworked to fit like a cape, with tartan patches and an oversized Peter Pan collar (a Ganni signature).
“Some of the silhouettes are very iconic Barbour, with the cord, collars, and wrinkles,” says Barbour’s director of womenswear, Nicola Brown. “But it’s those twists to them, the proportions, the hardware with a little pop of green, which really stands out as Ganni.”
If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that the two brands launched their first collection back in 2022, followed by a second in 2023. Each iteration continues to build upon Barbour’s key outerwear silhouettes, spliced, patched, and printed with an explosion of texture and color that channels Ganni’s downtown-cool aesthetic.
“I think what I really love about collaborations, and when you extend [them] to do more, you get to know each other better,” says Ganni creative director Ditte Reffstrup. “So the first is always a little bit terrifying. You’re really afraid of stepping over the line. And I think the more you get to know each other, the more relaxed you get, and the creative process is just easier.”
As the ties between the brands thicken, it also grows. The Ganni x Barbour 3.0 collab introduces two new silhouettes: the patch-adorned duffle coat and a belted trench. Inspired by a Barbour archive piece dating back to 1934, the trench holds special meaning to Refstrup who recalls her first time seeing the quintessential fall coat worn by Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer, which made a lasting impression. “I’m from the countryside in Denmark and no one was wearing that. So for me, that is a very iconic fashion piece. It’s something you can have in your closet forever.”
It’s one of her favorites, along with the parka, which is a riff on Barbour’s Durham jacket. “I don’t have a driver license, I only bike,” says Refstrup. “So I need a very practical coat. And I love this one because— I always listen to music or podcasts— I can put on my headphones and slip on the big hood and I don’t even need the rain trousers because it’s so long. There’s this kind of sporty vibe to it and I love matching it with very feminine styling.”
This writer had the opportunity to visit Copenhagen, the homeplace of Ganni for a few days to experience the collection in the place that birthed it. As someone who tends to favor more traditional silhouettes and muted prints, the duffle coat was a perfect middle ground. It’s warm on its own, yet roomy enough to comfortably layer a thick cardigan underneath for additional insulation. As we made our way through Copenhagen’s landmarks, including the famous deer park, Jaesgorsborg Dyrehave, which overlooks the Øresund, I was well-protected from the chilly air, focusing less on the temperature sinking and more on the crisp breeze and tranquility of my environment— how the sun danced across the trees as the birds congregated and two little deer were spotted from afar. See, dreamy.
Reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainability, each jacket in the collection can be sent in for repair through Barbour’s Wax for Life program. “Whether it’s a part of Barbour’s range or a collaboration, we will always offer that service for the jackets that we design together,” says Brown. “They’re here to be timeless, to be passed down generations, to be repaired and reworked so that they’re never thrown away.”
And worn they will be. Since arriving back in the states, I’ve found myself reaching for my coat, or patiently waiting for the next chilly morning to slip it on. Not every coat can make me feel elegant or ready to take on what elements are thrown my way. Further, no other coat can transport me back to that gentle hill where time seemingly stood still, if only for a moment. All that was wonderfully calm until the cold deepened and it was time to zip-up and move along.
