Geaux Jobs Center in Plaquemine benefits employers and job seekers, supervisor says

On-the-Job Training is one of the most attractive benefits of Geaux Jobs, Supervisor Lana D’Albor said

A service offered in southeast Louisiana has helped employers recruit dependable employees and has provided job seekers with tools they need to succeed.

Lana D’Albor, the supervisor for the Geaux Jobs Center in Plaquemine, recently spoke to the Plaquemine Rotary Club about the program, which serves Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana and the City of Donaldsonville.

The primary goal is to help two sets of customers — job seekers and employers, she said.

Geaux Jobs assists with resume writing, applicant recruitment, job search and interviews.

“We work very closely with employers to monitor their employee needs, which helps residents stay aware of the surrounding employment opportunities,” said D’Albor, who has supervised the regional office since 1988. “In our office, we have a lot of employers who may have an opening in a certain job but don’t want to advertise it.”

Geaux Jobs utilizes its database for those who come seeking employment.

Its primary focus is to help employers meet those recruiting needs by referring them to the applicants, which is the primary focus of the program.

It operates off laworks.net.

Employers who have a job opening can post the notice and the job free of charge after they create an account.

“We monitor the vacancies; you can look at resumes, set virtual recruiters and we can monitor applicants for you,” she said.

LaWorks also assists companies with job fairs, all at no cost to the employers.

A job fair is no less than two or three employers. If the company wants to hire 15 or 20 and wants to host a hiring event on its own, Geaux Jobs can provide that service at no charge.

In addition, Geaux Job provides a collection of data and information on labor force and employment that can be found on the website.

“It’s very beneficial and helps you stay competitive as an employer,” she said.

On-the-job training is a longtime facet of the program that remains one of the most attractive benefits of Geaux Jobs, D’Albor said.

It’s a program for those employers who want to have a person specifically trained for an area and that person may have no skill.

The annual job fair, one of the biggest events Geaux Jobs presents each year, is at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center in Plaquemine every March.

The 2024 event drew nearly 1,000 job seekers and students.

More than 80 vendors attended.

The vendors came from a wide array of industries, including banking, petrochemical, medical and others.

The Geaux Jobs Office is at 23510 Railroad Ave., Plaquemine. The phone number is (225) 687-0969.
