The Redding Fashion Alliance is helping kids learn more about sewing this summer.

The nonprofit’s staff will be offering project-based classes for a youth summer sewing camp beginning next month.

Some classes they’ll have are introductory sewing, making a summer outfit, as well as upcycling jeans. Those from the ages of 8 to 17 are welcome to sign up.

RFA team members told us the classes create a space for kids to learn valuable skills.

“The cool thing about the summer camps is that they are longer and [have] more options, and the kids can really just pick and choose what they want to create,” RFA Interim Executive Director Abigail Young said. “It captivates them because it’s longer sessions, they can delve more into the craft of sewing. It’s something fun for them to do that’s also educational, that keeps their brains active through those months.”

“Sewing actually contributes to a lot of different fundamental skills,” RFA Executive Director Yvonne Mazzotta said. “They’ll have a social outlet. It allows them to integrate and learn from their peers. Our teachers are incredible.”

The classes will be carried out at the Redding School of the Arts on Inspiration Place. Sessions start on June 17, with each class being held over a four-day period. In total, the summer sewing camp will last for seven weeks.

The cost is $145 per class, and there are also scholarship funds available for campers.

You can find out more about the camp and applying for scholarship funds on the RFA’s site here, in addition to registering via Redding Recreation’s site here.
