Gibson breaks own qualification world record with 718 points

World number one Ella Gibson has shot a new compound women’s world record of 718 out of a possible 720 points for the 72-arrow 50-metre qualifying round, subject to ratification, at a top-tier domestic event in Woking, Great Britain.

“It feels amazing. I, of course, always want to break records,” said Gibson.

“I wasn’t expecting it to happen this weekend. Absolutely not. Surrey is notoriously windy but we were blessed with perfect weather. I wasn’t well, I haven’t shot in the last three days. I was just trying to be kind to myself.”

The score increases the previous world best, shot by Ella at last year’s European Games, by three points and matches the men’s record, which was shot by Braden Gellenthien in 2016.

Gibson’s first 36 arrows scored 358. Her back half was perfect.

“The second to last end was probably my hardest. I was just trying to make sure that it was good enough to give me some space on the last,” she said.

“I finished with a five-X 60.”

The 24-year-old holds five of the eight compound women’s world records available outdoors. Sara Lopez owns the other three.
