Going to Georgia-Alabama game? Here is when GDOT says you should travel to Tuscaloosa

For those in Georgia planning to travel to Tuscaloosa for the Georgia-Alabama game on Saturday, September 28, it is strongly recommended to arrive early, but not too early, with Hurricane Helene on its way.

The hurricane is expected to hit Florida’s Big Bend region late Thursday, according to AccuWeather. After making landfall, the storm is predicted to move into Georgia by Friday.

This could bring significant storm surge and coastal flooding, particularly in areas like Savannah, starting Thursday night into Friday.

Heavy rains are also expected to cause flooding in parts of inland Georgia as the storm progresses, with a high risk of falling trees and broken limbs, potentially leading to widespread power outages.

So, when can you drive to Tuscaloosa?

To avoid the worst of the storm, it’s best to travel before the hurricane arrives or after the hurricane has passed, as Georgia is already seeing the affects of the storm now.

It was likely best to leave late Wednesday or early Thursday, as the intensity of the storm will increase throughout Thursday and into Friday.

With the storm expected to move quickly, later in the day on Friday is your best bet to head to the top-5 showdown.

Driving during a hurricane is not recommended, but if it is unavoidable, the Georgia Department of Transportation has a response plan for Hurricane Helene and offers safety tips for motorists, including:

  • GDOT urges folks to avoid nonessential travel and monitor road conditions using the 511GA app.
  • Call 511 to report flash flooding, downed trees or other obstructions that impede travel on roadways or bridges.
  • Don’t drive around barricades that are in place for motorists safety or through standing water.
  • Don’t clear tree limbs, downed trees or debris from roadways. Live power lines could be tangled in debris and can cause injury or death. Instead, wait for GDOT or Georgia Power crews.
  • If you must drive during severe weather, treat flashing red and non-operational traffic lights as a four-way stop.

What about the weather for the game?

Saturday’s game, in Tuscaloosa at 7:30 p.m., is expected to steer clear of any severe weather and it is expected to be moderately warm, according to The Weather Channel.
